How to Replace an audi keys replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error car key replacement audi code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look for in my area signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your car.
