How to Replace an Audi A3 Key fob replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing is a bit tricky because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. If you have any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires audi keys replacement.
