Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the audi spare key replacement in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, replacement key for audi a4 example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at the Bosch unit which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of your audi lost key's transmission, audi key Programmer since it relays information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is the same across the audi Key blade 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
